The ASWANG | MANANANGGAL Earrings are a part of The Perpetually Haunted Collection, and tell a story of my personal experiences with chronic pain, and to visualize an invisible illness. These particular earrings draw inspiration from Filipino folklore. Growing up, my mom would tell me stories of Aswang, which is used to describe various shapeshifting evil creatures. For these earrings, I drew inspiration specifically from a type of Aswang called the Manananggal - a terrifying winged mythical creature in the Philippines that is able to separate its upper torso from the lower part of its body. Sometimes , during especially bad flare ups I'd imagine being split in two, and I'd think of the scary Manananggal my mom told me about while growing up.
This collection is dedicated to those who are also struggling, to help bring comfort and empowerment when things are especially hard.
